The Danube Road – Dobrogini, part I
River heritage, cultural routes and Dobrogea communities
Through research, photojournalistic documentation, local collaborations and the development of cultural routes, the project brought to the forefront places, stories, monuments, landscapes and communities located in the vicinity of the Danube, in Constanța County.
The story of the project
The Danube Road started from a simple question: what lies beyond the already known image of tourist Dobrogea? Beyond the coastline, beyond the great established destinations, there is a Danube Dobrogea — more discreet, less visible, but extremely rich in cultural, natural, historical and community heritage.
The project aimed to discover and highlight this region through a first stage of exploration and documentation. We looked at the localities along the Danube in Constanța County, at fortresses, museums, archaeological sites, places of worship, natural landscapes, local stories and communities that still preserve living traces of Dobrogea's diversity.
The project developed four cultural itineraries connecting places such as Cernavodă, Seimeni, Topalu, Capidava, Rasova, Satu Nou, Izvoarele, Lipnița, Hârșova, Ghindărești, Cheile Dobrogei, Canaraua Fetii, Canlia and Adamclisi. These routes were not designed only as tourist routes, but as tools of cultural interpretation: ways in which visitors can better understand the connection between people, river, heritage and territory.
An important part of the project was field research. The YVS team documented the trails with photographs, collected cultural materials, spoke with people from the communities, and worked with specialists to build a clearer picture of the cultural and natural resources in the area. In the process, local guides and people passionate about history, culture, and heritage became important landmarks of the project — true ambassadors of the places they represent.
The Danube Road also had an environmental responsibility component. Beyond cultural heritage, the project talked about sustainable tourism, about respect for nature, and about how visiting a region should support, not consume, local resources.
For YVS, this project was more than a one-off intervention. It was the beginning of a strategic direction: Dobrogea as a territory of research, interpretation, civic education and community development. From the Danube Road, the Dobrorigini initiative and the desire to build a cultural platform dedicated to the memory, heritage and identity of Dobrogea took shape.
What we set out to do
- To document and promote the cultural, historical and natural heritage of the communities located in the vicinity of the Danube, in Constanța County.
- Let's develop cultural routes that connect heritage sites, natural landscapes, local communities and less visible stories of Dobrogea.
- Let's increase the visibility of under-promoted localities and cultural objectives, through research, photography, digital materials and public communication.
- Let's contribute to the development of a responsible way of exploring Dobrogea, by including the principles of ecotourism and sustainable tourism.
- Let's lay the foundations for a cultural platform dedicated to Dobrogea, which can be later developed through new projects, resources and materials.
What did I get?
- Four cultural itineraries dedicated to the cultural and natural heritage of Danubian Dobrogea: Cernavodă–Seimeni–Topalu–Capidava, Rasova–Strunga–Satu Nou–Izvoarele–Lipnița, Hârșova–Ghindărești–Cheile Dobrogei and Canaraua Fetii–Canlia–Adamclisi.
- Archive of cultural materials that includes photographs, maps, stories, articles and information about the Dobrudja heritage. The project aimed to collect a minimum of 50 materials, and in the end approximately 100 materials were collected.
- The Danube Road – Dobrorigini cultural guide, a resource dedicated to the four thematic routes, with information about cultural, historical and natural objectives, orientation maps, exploration recommendations and suggestions for local experiences.
- The Responsible Traveler's Guide – The Danube Road, dedicated to the principles of ecotourism, sustainable tourism and responsible exploration of natural and cultural heritage.
Non-governmental association dedicated to civic engagement, heritage and community development.
