Urban Signatures – The Architectural Identity of Bucharest

Architecture as the language of the city

Urban Signatures is a project dedicated to discovering the architects, engineers and builders who shaped Bucharest, starting from the author's signatures visible on the facades of buildings. Through research, photographic documentation, interactive digital map and educational resources, the project aims to transform the city into a learning space accessible to all.

About the project

The story of the project

Bucharest is a city of overlapping architectural layers. Eclectic, neo-Romanian, art deco, interwar modernism, monumental public buildings, apartment buildings, townhouses, elegant apartment blocks, discreet facades and details that we often pass by without noticing.

On many of these buildings, however, there is a very concrete trace: the signature of the architect, engineer or builder. Sometimes it is a discreet plaque, sometimes an inscription in stone or metal, hidden at the base level, near the entrance or on a facade crossed by hundreds of people every day. These signatures are small clues about who designed the city and how Bucharest came to look the way we see it today.

Urban Signatures – Bucharest's architectural identity starts from these visible but rarely explained traces. Instead of looking at the built heritage as a simple list of buildings, the project puts the authors at the center: architects, engineers and builders whose visions have contributed to the formation of the capital's urban identity.

The project aims to document buildings with visible authorial signatures from public space and transform them into an accessible cultural resource. Each building becomes an entry point into a larger story: who designed it, in what context it appeared, what architectural style it expresses, what details are worth noting and how it relates to the evolution of the city.

An important part of the project is the development of an interactive digital map, which will allow the public to explore urban signatures by neighborhoods, authors, styles and thematic routes. The platform will be designed as a cultural education tool, not just a database: it will include accessible explanations, photographs, documentation sheets, curated routes and a visual dictionary of architectural elements.

Through this approach, Urban Signatures tries to make architecture easier to read. The general public does not need complicated technical language to approach the city, but clear landmarks, visual examples and well-constructed stories. The project proposes precisely this urban visual literacy: the ability to observe a facade, to recognize a detail, to understand a style and to see the city as the result of successive visions.

For YVS, Semnături Urbane continues the open direction through Urban Explorers, but in a more documentary, digital and educational format. If Urban Explorers temporarily opens houses and neighborhoods to the public, Semnături Urbane offers a permanent exploration tool: a living map of the signed Bucharest, which can be completed, expanded and used over time by residents, pupils, students, teachers, guides, architects and cultural tourists.

Proposed Objectives

What we set out to do

  • Let's document at least 50 buildings in Bucharest that retain visible signatures of architects, engineers or builders.
  • Let's develop an interactive digital map that allows the exploration of documented buildings through thematic filters, neighborhoods, authors, styles, and curated routes.
  • Let's create documentation sheets for the selected buildings, with information about the author, historian, architectural style, urban context, and verification sources.
  • Let's develop a visual dictionary of architecture, which will help the general public recognize styles, decorative elements and details of Bucharest buildings.
  • Let's transform the signatures on the facades into a tool for cultural education and bringing the public closer to the built heritage.
  • Let's encourage community participation by allowing the public to report new urban signatures, which can be verified and later integrated into the platform.
Expected results

What are we looking for?

  • A research dedicated to the author's signatures visible on Bucharest's buildings, with field documentation, photography, archiving and verification of information.
  • An interactive digital map that will include a minimum of 50 documented buildings, with photographs, historical information, stylistic descriptions and thematic trails.
  • A visual dictionary of architecture, built for the general public, with clear explanations of styles, decorative details, and facade elements.
  • A public participation system through which users will be able to report new buildings with author signatures, with the information being validated before publication.
  • A public launch event and a photographic exhibition dedicated to the urban signatures and architectural identity of Bucharest.
