Urban Explorers – Night Session, First Edition

Heritage Houses Evening

Urban Explorers – Night Session, Edition I was the first edition of the project through which YVS opened heritage houses in Bucharest to the public and transformed them, for one evening, into living spaces of exploration, memory and cultural encounter. The project was submitted and funded under the title Heritage Houses Evening, and the public event was launched under the identity of Urban Explorers – Night Session, a format dedicated to exploring urban heritage through guided tours, artistic interventions, theater, workshops and cultural activities.

About the project

The story of the project

Urban Explorers – Night Session was born from a simple question: how can we make people feel closer to Bucharest's built heritage?

In a city with many historic buildings, but few real opportunities to enter, understand and feel these spaces, the first edition of Urban Explorers proposed a format of cultural exploration that went beyond simple sightseeing. Heritage houses became, for an evening, stages, storytelling spaces, meeting places and starting points for a more personal relationship with the city.

The project was built around the idea that heritage should not be seen only as a monument, facade or urban decoration. It can become a living experience, if the public has the opportunity to come into direct contact with the stories of the houses, the history of the places, the people who lived in them or transformed them, and the way these buildings influenced the social, cultural and architectural life of the city.

The first edition, organized in 2024, explored the area of IL Caragiale, Jean Louis Calderon, Italiană and partly the Armenian Quarter, in a symbolic moment: the 565th anniversary of the first documentary attestation of Bucharest. The central theme was the history of the neighborhood and the houses behind the great boulevards — those places that do not always appear in the foreground of the city, but preserve within their walls the memory of urban life of the past.

The event included an opening moment at OAR Bucharest, where the public and partners discussed restoration, heritage and responsibility towards historic buildings. On September 20, the Urban Explorers route invited the public to discover houses and spaces such as the UAR headquarters – Center for Architectural Culture, Casa Caragiale, Espace Minoux, Bon Mariage – Italiană 21, Grădinița Le Carousel / Vila Mincu and the Center for Legal Resources.

The experience combined guided tours, theatrical skits, workshops for children, an exhibition of historic cars, screenings, the launch of an issue of Arhitectura Magazine and encounters with the stories of buildings. The skits were inspired by real stories or the atmosphere of the places, transforming the visits into moments of cultural interpretation: „Party at Lawyer Ananie’s House”, „Autumn in Italian Street”, „Estates (Table of Contents)” and „Duel on Four Wheels. Assan vs. Bibescu”.

An important element of the edition was the openness to different audiences. The event was not only addressed to architecture or heritage lovers, but also to families, young people, children and the general public. The closing of the edition included a guided tour dedicated to children and young people from disadvantaged categories, organized together with the Istoria Povestita Association, in order to make the heritage experience more accessible and inclusive.

For YVS, the first edition of Urban Explorers was an anchor project: a beginning of methodology, an exercise in broad cultural collaboration, and a confirmation that built heritage can be activated through participatory, creative, and memorable experiences.

What we set out to do

  • Let's open public access to heritage houses and historical spaces in Bucharest that are usually difficult to access or insufficiently known.
  • Let's create an urban cultural trail that connects houses, streets, stories and artistic activities into a coherent city exploration experience.
  • Let's transform the built heritage into a living experience, through guided tours, theatrical skits, workshops and cultural interventions.
  • Let's raise awareness of the value of Bucharest's architectural heritage and the need for its conservation, restoration and reuse.
  • Let's involve cultural partners, architects, artists, guides, organizations and volunteers in a collaborative format that can be repeated and developed in future editions.
  • Let's test a model of urban cultural event that connects the public with heritage through emotion, story, curiosity, and direct participation.
