Cultural activity – Bookstore&Tea Mangalia
Bookstore-teahouse, community and the first YVS cultural initiatives
During 2017–2020, Youth Vision for Society joined the cultural and community activities developed around Bookstore&Tea Mangalia, an independent space dedicated to reading, dialogue, art and local meetings. Through organizational, logistical, administrative and content support, YVS contributed to the consolidation of a vibrant cultural program, open to the public in Mangalia and built around books, theater, poetry, education and community.
The story of the project
Bookstore&Tea Mangalia was more than a bookstore-teahouse. It was a meeting place for people, ideas, books, artists, teachers, children, youth and members of the local community. In a city where independent cultural infrastructure was limited, Bookstore&Tea functioned as a small informal cultural center, close to people and open to diverse activity formats.
Since 2017, the Youth Vision for Society Association has joined this cultural dynamic, supporting the organization and development of events dedicated to the general public. The collaboration included logistical, organizational and administrative support, content contributions and involvement in activities that brought together culture, education, socialization and community participation.
The cultural program included book launches, poetry evenings, theater evenings, meetings with special guests, activities dedicated to national holidays and Romanian traditions, events for young people, thematic meetings for the community, personal development workshops and educational activities for children. The bookstore became a place where culture was not treated as a solemn and distant event, but as a natural, accessible and close experience to the life of the community.
Among the activities organized or supported were book launches such as „Muze și alte șiști” by Bianca Iordăchescu and „Valsul frunzelor de dor” by Mariana Păduraru, events dedicated to the work of Mihai Eminescu, meetings with local poets, history and art evenings dedicated to Professor Dr. Aldea Gheorghe and theater evenings held in partnership with the local troupe Thaliamar. Over time, the space has also hosted conferences, creative activities, youth meetings, community events and visits by kindergarten and primary school children.
For YVS, this stage represented a first important exercise in working with the public, with local partners and with accessible cultural formats. It was a period of beginning, testing and learning, but also a moment in which one of the ideas that remains important for the organization took shape: culture can build community when it is close to people.
