On September 20, Bucharest hosted a unique cultural experience, offering its residents the opportunity to rediscover the city's history through a series of captivating activities during the event. Urban Explorers – Night Session. Organized by the team Youth Vision for Society, this year's edition proposed a fascinating combination of exploration of architectural heritage, theater in unique locations, and thematic exhibitions, all taking place in various heritage houses in the city center.
Opening of the event at OAR Bucharest
The opening session took place on September 19, at the headquarters Order of Architects of Romania (OAR) Bucharest, where architects, heritage lovers and organizers came together to discuss the preservation of built cultural heritage and the city's modern challenges. Under the guidance of the Vice President of the Bucharest OAR, the discussion was open and full of diverse perspectives. Participants shared their opinions and wishes regarding the future of the capital's architectural heritage, in a dialogue that highlighted the need to adapt to constant urban changes.
"Happy Structures" Workshop – Architecture for the Little Ones
The day of September 20th started with a special workshop for children, organized at Le Carousel Kindergarten. Under the coordination of The Architecture Association, the young participants had the opportunity to design their own structures, drawing inspiration from the plans provided by the organizers. During the workshop „"Happy Structures"”, each child created their own house, establishing details about the interior spaces and the configuration of the building. The activity took place in Villa Mincu, a heritage house designed by architect Arghir Culina, about which informative panels were also exhibited, thus offering an interactive architecture lesson.
Retromobil and the launch of the magazine "Automobilul și Orașul"„
Later in the day, participants were able to enjoy an excursion into the history of motoring through the exhibition Retromobile, which took place during the event. The exhibition of historic cars attracted the attention of those present, giving them the opportunity to admire automobiles from other eras and better understand their impact on urban development.
Also in this context, the magazine was launched. „"The Car and the City"”, which explores the relationship between mobility and urban architecture. The discussions that followed focused on urban traffic and how technology and transportation innovations have reshaped the landscape of Bucharest over the decades.
Guided tour through the architectural heritage
One of the highlights of the evening was the guided tour led by Ovidiu Neacsu, which was attended by almost 100 people. On his route, Ovidiu Neacșu presented the houses participating in the event, as well as other impressive buildings, such as Villa Mathilda and examples of architecture Art Deco. The enthusiasm of the participants and the large number of registrations demonstrated a strong interest in the city's architectural heritage.
Theater in old houses in Bucharest
The evening ended with a series of theater skits, organized in four different locations, each with a unique story and memorable personalities.
- to Space Minoux, the participants were invited by the lawyer Ananie (a character inspired by the history of the house) to a musical evening, where Raluca Radu and George Vizitiu they delighted the audience with refined musical moments.
- In The house at 21 Italian Street, actresses Gabriela Popescu and Angela John they recreated the melancholic atmosphere of the 1940s, when the house was about to be nationalized. Scene „"Autumn in the Italian Street"” captured the nostalgic and humorous conversations between two sisters dealing with the changes around them.
- At the headquarters UAR, the verbal duel between Bazil G. Assan and Prince Bibescu, interpreted by Dimitrii Bogomaz and Caesar Antal, captivated the audience with his acid humor. In the skit „"Duel on four wheels: Assan vs. Bibescu"”, the two clashed not only on the topic of cars, but also on the "art" of crooked parking.
- In Caragiale House, the actor Lari Georgescu brought to the stage „"Romanian Fad"”, a monodrama inspired by the writings of Ion Luca Caragiale, offering the audience an interpretation full of irony and critical spirit.
A successful conclusion
With almost 1,000 participants in the event's activities, Urban Explorers – Night Session managed to perfectly combine the exploration of architectural heritage with unique cultural experiences. The organizers managed to bring together ancient histories, modern innovations and moments of reflection on the future of built cultural heritage. Each activity was an invitation to rediscover the city and connect with its history, in an accessible and interactive way.
The event was co-organized by Architecture Magazine and UAR, and the partners who contributed to its success were: Bucharest Regional Office, ARCUBE (under the aegis of the program Open Streets), Bucharest Municipality Museum, The Story of Bucharest Platform, Retromobile Club Romania, The Architecture Association, Happy Projects, The Narrated History Association, Sketch Magazine, and Mincu Student Association.
The enthusiasm and positive feedback from participants suggest that this event will remain a reference in the cultural landscape of the capital, and future editions will continue to attract an increasingly large audience.
